When Saturday waits are really a roster problem
Owners often ask us to fix reception first when Saturday waits blow out. On site, we frequently find the opposite sequence: a clinician cancels Friday afternoon, locum rules are verbal, and Monday’s backlog starts before the weekend opens.
Three questions to ask before blaming the desk
- Who can approve a locum after 4 pm Friday? If the answer differs by clinician, reception is guessing.
- Are high-demand appointment types clustered on Saturdays? Double-length initial assessments stacked at 9 am will jam any desk.
- Is billing done during peak or deferred? Reception staff splitting tasks mid-triage extend waits even with a perfect script.
A low-cost first step
Plot eight weeks of Saturday appointment volume against clinician hours actually rostered — not scheduled leave, but who was physically present. The gap is usually visible before you spend on consultants.
When the gap is policy, not people, a half-day Reception & Patient Flow review often suffices. When rosters shift every fortnight without a written rule, start with Roster & Staffing Plan instead.
